Laura Severin Named Head, Department of English
NC State’s Department of English will welcome Laura Severin as head, effective January 1, 2018. Severin takes over from Tony Harrison, who will return to the faculty after serving as head with energy and distinction for 11 years.
Retiring NC State poet helped save endangered script from extinction
After trending toward extinction for decades, the fate of Vietnam’s ancient script, Chữ Nôm, now has a healthier outlook. NC State English professor John Balaban has helped lead many of the developments that kick-started Nôm’s rebound from an endangered calligraphic way of writing to a preserved tradition.

Donors Help Top Students Reach Their Potential
The College of Humanities and Social Sciences continues to grow as a destination college for talented, top-ranked students from across our state and beyond. Merit scholarships play a critical part in attracting and retaining such students. This year, CHASS awarded more than 100 merit-based scholarships across all its disciplines. A number of scholarship students were able to thank their donors at the college's 2014 Scholarship Luncheon.
CHASS Women Lauded for Equity Efforts
Three CHASS women were lauded for their contributions to equity at the 2014 Sisterhood Dinner held on campus by NC State's Council on the Status of Women. Kudos to Deborah Hooker, Mary Wyer and Suzanne Martin.
January Student of the Month
Brooke Wilner is a sophomore Caldwell Fellow and Benjamin Franklin Scholar, pursuing a degree in both English and Aerospace Engineering. She is involved with the Feed The Pack Food Pantry, Writing and Speaking Tutorial Services, and CSLEP's Leadership in Action program. She studied abroad at Oxford in Summer 2013.
Three of Four 2013 Mathews Medalists are CHASS Students
Three of the four seniors receiving the Mathews Medal this year are CHASS students. The Mathews Medal is the highest non-academic distinction awarded to NC State students, and is reserved for those who have made significant contributions based on leadership and service.
