Debate Exercises in Every Class

Wednesday, March 22nd 2017, 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Event Navigation

The Campus Writing and Speaking Program Brown Bag Series presents "Debate Exercises in Every Class," facilitated by Dr. Jean Goodwin, Professor of Communication.

Debates encourage students to engage deeply with course material, provide opportunities for oral communication practice, and allow different viewpoints to be explored in a civil fashion — a vital practice under contemporary circumstances. This short workshop will introduce the scholarship on teaching and learning debates, and review how instructors can incorporate debates into their pedagogy. Jean Goodwin is a professor in the Department of Communication and a member of the Leadership in Public Science cluster. Her research focuses on argumentation theory: how citizens who disagree, perhaps deeply, can nevertheless manage to coordinate productive exchanges of reasons. Six Panera Bread box lunches will be provided to early responders. Lunch winners will be notified via email. Please register at http://go.ncsu.edu/oloyoj.
